How do you inspect a tree for wildlife before you cut it down?

Now that it is spring, we are cutting down trees and branches that were damaged during the winter. We try to be very careful not to disturb any trees that may contain baby animals or nesting birds. I worry that we are going to killl or do something worse (i.e.cut through a tree that has live animals in it) if we miss something/someone on inspection. Anyone out there have a reliable and systematic way to inspect a tree for wildlife before they cut it down? How do you inspect a tree for wildlife before you cut it down?
There is no sure fire way. Sorry, about that but you simply have to do the best you can. Even if there is none in it now there may be wildlife staying in it.

The best you can do is to make sure there is plenty of wildlife habitat available and to replace what you remove. Planting bushes and native plants in landscaping areas really helps! try a search for native landscaping. How do you inspect a tree for wildlife before you cut it down?
If you are concerned for possible wildlife, don't invite Ted Nugent to you limb-trimming party.
